Coursework preliminary exercise
1) Write a 100 word statement of intent explaining what you are going to make for your preliminary exercise.
Statement of intent:
I plan to produce a one page spread for a magazine focusing on a new celebrity gossip aimed at an audience demographic of NRS social grade. This magazine focuses on a celebrity influencer who is launching their new book and the book is about making positive lifestyle changes.
The front cover will feature a large, high quality photograph of the celebrity in a outfit that is aimed at audience demographics or reinforces the idea of it. The text will provide a brief introduction and a overview of the celebrity's gossip. The front cover will include a title that will reinforce the idea of the gossip that is aimed at a audience demographics of NRS social grades C2DE. This will be followed by a slogan and at least four cover lines that have a overview of the gossip.
The second page will have introduction of the influencer who is launching their new book. The book is about making positive lifestyle changes. The page will include a series of smaller photos and texts that will offer insight of the of the positive lifestyle changes. Each lifestyle change will have different fonts that which will indicate the different lifestyle changes that will highlighted in the page. The overall tone will be informative allowing readers to feel connected or understand the celebrity's world and gossip.
2) Write an outline for your preliminary exercise on your blog. This needs to include talking points and photo lists. To see how a magazine is presented, and to look at professional examples, check out the following link which gives lot of tips and tricks on how to layout and plan your magazine.
The magazine will include the 3 most things that you need such as layout of the page, headline and most importantly the main image.
The fonts of the writing will be different for each specific thing that will be included in the magazine such as the headline will different compared to the quotes or the intro so that is better for the reader to understand it more better and is engaged in the magazine.
The page will have white spaces to further reinforce the point to make the headline or the quotes to stand out and attract/engage the reader. The viewing direction will most likely be top left to bottom right so that the flow of plan isn't over complicated.
3) Casting: Who will be in your magazine?
Haviyan and Bhramvir most likely
4) Plan your locations: Where you will shoot your preliminary exercise? (You can take photos off-site if you wish to do this for homework - this is what we would strongly recommend). Important note: You CANNOT take any students out of any other lessons OR disturb any other lessons in the school. If you wish to take shots in-school then you will need to shoot with Mr Ray supervising or after school with a Media teacher present.
high residential areas
parks maybe, Westfield
home, central london
5) Write your shot list: every shot you plan to film. This needs to be far MORE shots than you will actually use in the final edited version - plan extra angles, close-ups, long shots and more. You can find an example shot list here. This is for a narrative film but the layout will be the same.
Close up shots - perfect for capturing emotions, make-up and expression
medium close up shot in streets - while the celebrity is walking, talking, chatting etc..
wide and long shot in public - to show outfit, posture, and presence
action shot - while celebrity is walking
extreme close up - to show the expression, reaction and emotion of the celebrity
over the shoulder shot - to show the quotes and dialogue/gossip
establishing shot - to show where the celebrity to reinforce and then zoom into different shots to reinforce celebrity gossip.
close up or extreme close up shots - to show what the celebrity is perhaps holding or doing.
