Language


1) Write the definition of the following key language for newspaper front pages (you may want to add an example for each from our Daily Mirror CSP):


Masthead: The title block of the newspaper

Pug: something to catch the reader's eyes

Splash Head: the lead story

Slogan: sums up ethos of newspaper

Dateline: date newspaper was published

Byline: gives the name of journalist/writer

Standfirst: introduction paragraph usually in bold


2) What is the main story on the CSP edition of the Daily Mirror (see above)? Make sure you learn the headline and what the story is about.

A post office scandal that happened due to the software they used which was produced by Fujistu. This scandal cause many people in financial jeopardy. The Daily Mirror directs the anger of the audience towards the CEO of the post office and the OBE of the former chairman of Fujistu  

3) What is the 'pug' or smaller celebrity story on the front cover? Why might it appeal to Daily Mirror readers?

"exclusive: post office scandal". this appeals to the newspaper audience since they now know what the main story of the day is.

4) Why is the choice of news stories, content and page design on the Mirror CSP front page typical of a tabloid newspaper?

it includes more images that writing and the price of the paper itself is £1.40 making it affordable for the working class (target audience).

5) What is the balance on the Daily Mirror front page between images, headlines and text?

it can be seen that there are a lot more images than text highlighting the fact that the daily mirror is a tabloid newspaper.


Representations


1) What political party does the Daily Mirror support? Is there any evidence to support this in the CSP pages we have studied?

They support the Labour party because they are against the conservatives ( they go against the rich and the powerful) 

2) How does the Daily Mirror represent the Post Office in the CSP pages? Why do you think they present them in this way?

The Daily Mirror directs the audiences anger at the CEO of the Post office instead of the post office itself. They do this to sympathise with the victims of the scandal. This is reinforced through the emotive language and a image of a old couple

3) How is Fujitsu represented in the Daily Mirror CSP pages? Look particularly at the use of images on the front cover and the section on Fujitsu on the inside page. Give detailed answers with evidence from the CSP pages.

The Daily Mirror blames everything at the Fujitsu as they are against the conservatives and also since they are rich and powerful. They also use emotive language to support this and the image of the former OBE of the Fujitsu when he has a smug on his face.

4) How are the Conservative Party represented in the Daily Mirror? Again, provide evidence from the CSP pages to support your answers.

The anger of the audience is also pointed at them as well as they are the conservative party that support the rich and powerful. This is further shown through The Daily Mirror itself as they are against the conservatives 

5) Read the main articles on the inside pages. How are different people, groups and organisations represented in the Daily Mirror? Does this reinforce or subvert the stereotypes we usually see in the media? 

People are represented as innocent and sympathetic and the government is presented as uncaring as they only care for the rich and powerful. This reinforces stereotypes as those who are innocent sympathise with others whereas those who are uncaring direct their anger at others

The information that media companies use to create a demographic profile of their audience is age, gender, social class and race. 2) Why are media companies and advertisers increasingly using audience profiling and not just demographics? Advert of my choice

 Denotation There is some texts and different colours. There is a rainbow and the background appears to be a sky and also has clouds. Connotation The different colours suggest that there are more than one variety of flavours to choose from and the white phrase suggest that you should try all of them. The background is a sky and some clouds suggesting the this is a exciting product that the audience should taste. Analysis This advert helps the audience to understand that the colours reflect the skittles themself and that the brand does not take it self too seriously. This adds the positive and happy atmosphere that makes the audience try out there new skittles flavours. The white texts suggests that if you eat this then you can reach your own place of mind and go beyond rainbows and reach high places.
